What do I need?

This game is part of the Naivigation universe. It means you need two things to play this game.

  • The Core Set from Naivigation (which you need for all games).
  • And the specific material for this game. (“Download” > Core Set.)

Print and cut it, read the short playful rules, and you can play!

Playful Rules? It means you can press a button to get random examples of turns and setup, which is far more useful (and fun) than reading some text! I’ve been creating such rules for years now to great success.

Want more? You can also generate your own material right on this website, to suit your specific needs.

Background

As mentioned on the Naivigation page, this whole idea started with the car. Many years ago, I made a very flawed first version of Naivigation where you moved a car together. The core was really strong—which is why I continued to iterate on it—but the rules I came up with were just too convoluted and unbalanced.

When I created this new (and vastly improved) Naivigation series of games, I thought the car would be the first game again. I thought it was surely the simplest and most well-known vehicle, so its game should be the simplest. Right?

Well, no. I actually struggled the most with this vehicle. It was hard to make driving a car really feel different and play different than the other Naivigation games, without overcomplicating it. (My very first notes even said stuff like “Add a vehicle card for activating your windshield wipers?! What else can you do!?”)

Fortunately, as I continued development, I figured out how to make this game work. It still didn’t become the simplest version, because cars are confined to roads, which automatically makes it harder to control than, say, a spaceship that can float freely. But it became much simpler and much stronger, until I can proudly say that this might be my favorite of the “major Naivigation games”.

That being said, I am always looking for opportunities to improve and simplify. To make strong games with such simple rules that they’re accessible to anyone. As such, if you find improvements or have suggestions for simplification, let me know. (Because, looking at my data, most people try the “Car Version” of Naivigation first, precisely because they think it’s the vehicle that will be easiest or most relatable.)
